== Building a character ==
RuneScape takes place in the fantasy-themed world of Gielinor; no overall plot exists, although quests and NPC interaction reveal conflicts within the world.
Building a character allows for customisation, with a number of hair-styles and clothes to wear. A character can have:
'''Permanent clothing''', which is what they wear when not wearing armour or other items such as wizard robes or priest gowns, or
'''Temporary clothing''', items such as armour, robes, or hats. There are also ordinary shirts, normally blue or black, which can be found around the RuneScape world.

Permanent clothing can be modified at any clothes store for 500gp per section (top or legwear).
{{ToC}}

Temporary clothing can be bought at a clothes store or bought from other players. It can cost from 10-100gp for cloth, and up to 30mil for armour.

Skills in RuneScape involve:
* '''Skills of Creation''',
* '''Skills of Modification''', and
* '''Skills of Combat'''.

Examples of Creation skills:
* Mining, which allows you to mine ores to smelt and make into iron bars which can be used for
* Smithing, which allows you to make armour and weapons. One of the more popular skills, as it can make a lot of money for cash-strapped players, provided they have pickaxes and smithing hammers.

Examples of Modification skills:
* Cooking, which allows you to cook food, which regenerates health.
* Crafting, which allows you to create clothing using needles and thread.

Examples of Combat skills:
* Attack, which affects how often you hit, how many 0s you hit, and what weapons you can wield.
* Defence, which affects your efficiency at protecting yourself and which types of armour you can wear.

These skills can be leveled up easily in the lower levels, but as your efficiency gets higher, more experience in the skill is required to advance to the next level.

Skills are leveled up by doing the activity from which they take their name. Smithing, for example, can be leveled up by smelting bars of iron and working on them at an Anvil.

== Selling items in the RuneScape world ==
RuneScape has an active economy based around tokens referred to variously as coins, gold, gold pieces (from which comes the abbreviation GP), or gp. Unfortunately, the economy is in chaos, as there is no tax system and no limit to the number of coins in circulation.
Common abbreviations for money:
1 gp = One gold piece
1k = One thousand gold pieces
1mil = One million gold pieces (somewhat rare)
1bil = One billion gold pieces (very rare)
1tril = One trillion gold pieces (extremely rare)

== Other facts ==
The most ever players recorded on RuneScape at one time is 280,000.

RuneScape has a number of servers in different countries, each of which can host up to two thousand players. This allows for a massive amount of social interaction.

Every holiday season, Jagex inserts a seasonal update into the game. For instance, in Christmas 2005, it was possible to gain bobble hats and striped scarves, which would now be worth hundreds of thousands GP if if were able to be sold. The rare items of holiday drops that were tradable are now worth many million GP. Jagex now makes the holiday items untradable to stop people from making money too easily off them.
