Revealed at Nintendo's 2011 E3 press conference, the Wii U is the next-generation successor to the Wii. The Wii U is Nintendo's first high-definition console (capable of outputting 1080p video). As with its predecessor, the Wii U features a brand new controller—this time with a touchscreen built in. The Wii U hardware is backwards-compatible with Wii games and peripherals, but does not ship with support GameCube games or peripherals.

The Wii U launched with several exclusive games, including New Super Mario Bros. U and ZombiU, as well as several popular multi-platform games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Batman: Arkham City. Nintendo has promised that the Wii U will receiver better third-party support than the Wii, which lacked many multi-platform titles. The Wii U sold 13.56 million units during its lifetime, making it the lowest-selling home console, with the Nintendo Switch outselling the Wii U in nine months.
