Playable Characters[edit]

Goemon / Kid Ying[edit]

Goemon is gallant hero of Japan. He is loosely based off of the Japanese historical figure, Ishikawa Goemon. Although he is a thief, he is known to have saved Japan multiple times. While he is a little hot-headed and always eager to fight, Goemon cares for his friends and his town of Oedo and will stop any evil forces that try to mess with him. Renamed "Kid Ying" in the Western release.

Ebisumaru / Dr. Yang[edit]

Originally from Osaka, Ebisumaru moved into Oedo and became Goemon's roommate and partner in crime. Ebisu is extremely flamboyant and is popular with the ladies. He loves to eat and sleep. He is known to do some "questionable" things on occasion. Did I mention he really likes to eat? Renamed "Dr. Yang" in the Western release.

Non-Playable Characters[edit]

Yae[edit]

A beautiful kunoichi. Yae works for a Ninja Agent group and was captured by the Otafu Army. After being freed by Goemon, Yae aids them in their quest to find Princess Yuki, as she is trying to stop an army of counterfeiting shoguns, that might have captured Princess Yuki.

Monoshiri / Wise Old Man[edit]

An old man known for his great inventions, Monoshiri lives in Iga and has built several mechanical ninjas. Monoshiri is also known for his very perverted nature. Unfortunately, his transport machine is a fluke and malfunctions. He will be of bigger use in the second game, where is main invention creates a big "impact" on the series. Also known as the "Wise Old Man".

Princess Yuki[edit]

The princess of Oedo. Yuki is constantly being kidnapped by enemy organizations looking to take over Oedo (or the entirety of Japan). Rescuing Princess Yuki is the main goal in this game.

Oedo Lord[edit]

The Lord of Oedo and the father of Princess Yuki. He is also kidnapped by the enemy shoguns. Although, it appears that he is an enemy shogun. Is that really him?

Kurobei Cat[edit]

Part of the Ninja Cat clan. After being freed from the Ghost Woman, Kurobei informs Goemon that Yuki has been kidnapped. It also appears that Kurobei is Princess Yuki's cat.

Koban Cat[edit]

Leader of the Ninja Cat clan. His responsibility is to protect Edo. He has many apprentices including Kurobei. He is captured by Hyotoko clan and saved by Goemon. He informs the two that the Otafu Army has taken Princess Yuki.

Tanuki / Raccoon Dog[edit]

Not much is known about this mysterious character. He is a Japanese raccoon dog, also known as a tanuki. He appears before every side-view stage, to warn our heroes to be cautious. He is shown to have large...you can figure it out. This is to symbolize financial fortune.

Basic Enemies[edit]

Enemy Name Zone(s) Description
Fisherman 1,6 When killed, the fish will be left to attack you. Stay a good distance when attacking, then quickly kill the fish.

Swordsman 1,4,6,7,8 Basic enemy that only hurts you if you touch them. Kill them for some quick cash. Otherwise, avoid them.

Mercenary 1,4,6,7,8 Basic enemy that only hurts you if you touch them. Kill them for some quick cash. Otherwise, avoid them.

Ronin 1,2,4,6,8,9 Basic enemy that only hurts you if you touch them. Their spears give them longer range to attack you. Kill them for some quick cash. Otherwise, avoid them.

Lamp Guard 1,2,4,6,8,9 These enemies run at you and throw lamps. The lamps can be blocked by hitting them. However, it is hard to do so and its best to avoid these enemies as much as possible.

Moustache Man 4,6,7,8 Basic enemy that only hurts you if you touch them. Kill them for some quick cash. Otherwise, avoid them.

Thug 2,4,6 Possibly the most dangerous enemy in the game. If you appear in their line of sight, they will throw a barrage of coins at you. Worst of all, they are very fast on their feet and mostly appear out of nowhere. If you must attack him, do a jump attack when you get close to him. Otherwise, AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!
Hobo 5,6 Basic enemy that only hurt you if you touch them. Kill them for some quick cash. Otherwise, avoid them.

Special Enemies[edit]

Enemy Name Zone(s) Description
Round Ghost 1 These ghosts move very slow and don't put up much of a fight. Though, its best to avoid it.
Spinning Ghost 1 These ghosts bounce off walls and move decently fast. Attack them quickly or avoid them entirely.
Coconut? 1 What are these things? Coconuts? Whatever, you should kill them quickly or move out of their way, as they only move horizontally.
Undead Warrior 1 These undead warriors have a bone to pick with you, although they only move in a straight line, similar to Koopas in Super Mario Bros. Kill them for easy money or simply jump over them.
Fireball 1 Fireballs are real hot heads. Some move in a set pattern while others follow you around. Some even come from the background. These enemies aren't tough, they can be pretty predictable.
Zombie 1 These flesh eaters pop out from the ground to headbutt you. Just wait for them to go back into the ground and jump to the next platform.
Umbrella 1 Are these umbrellas? Anyways, they hop towards you when you get near. However, you can avoid them entirely by walking across the platform below.
Thief 1 If they see you, they will run really fast in your direction. Either strike them quickly or move to a different lane. If they attack you, they will steal $50 from you. Say what?!
Dancer 2 These dancers love to move to rhythm. They are easy to defeat by running up and whacking them.
Drunk 2 Somebody had to much to drink. Because of this, he has random mood swings. He will mostly stay put, but sometimes he will throw things at you. Best to avoid him.
Hound 2 This little pooch gets mad and attacks you aggressively when you get close. Try to move to the opposite of the screen to avoid waking them up.
Samurai 2 These guys fight in pairs. Attack them quickly, since they dash and strike quickly.
Trickster 3 Tricksters may look normal and harmless, but running into them makes a strange item pop out from their bags.
Wall Huggers 3 These weirdos hang from bridge gates and can randomly attack you, if you get close. Move to the opposite side to dodge them. They appear in groups of two.
Throwing Masked Men 3 Masked Men, except they throw items at you. Strike them quickly with a ranged weapon to avoid a hit.
Masked Men 3 The main workers of the Amusement Park. They are pretty easy to avoid or kill for quick cash.
Costumed Clown 3 The main mascot of the Amusement Park. He takes multiple hits to defeat and takes a huge amount of knockback. Attack him on one side, to prevent him from bumping into your partner.
Fish Merchant 3 If you get close, this angry fellow may hit you with his long buckets filled with fish.
Lil' Octo 3 These little guys come from the Big Octo and will move towards you to take some hits.
Bandit 4 A fellow that is doing some suspicious actions. He moves in a strange motion, but isn't hard to avoid or defeat.
Warped Robot 4 This mechanical character moves in a straight line. Be warned, if he hits you, he will steal your delicious food. Seriously?!
Deer 4 A common animal sighted around Yamato. It can hurt you, but if you hurt it, then you lose $10 for animal cruelty.
Ceiling Bombers 4 Ceiling Bombers are what the name suggests. Enemies that hang from the ceiling and drop bombs. Fortunately, you can kill them easily or simply crawl underneath them.
Curl Up Men 4 These guys can be a real pain. Sometimes, they roll across the ground. Other times, they bounce up and down. They can even bounce around the room's walls and ceiling. Be careful around them and don't let them stay for too long.
Handstanders 4 These handstands are a pretty impressive feat. Although, they take two hits to kill. Make sure not to bump them into other players.
Cannonmen 5 We have some real multitaskers here. They can shoot cannonballs at you, while also doing babysitting. Now that's cool! Just be sure to dodge his shots and strike him when he's open.
Bystander 5 I'm not sure what these guys are, but they just mind their own business. You can still kill them for more money or if they get in your way.
Wild Boar 5 These angry hogs come out of caves in the mountains. While they charge fast, they are rather easy to avoid. You can kill them if you'd like some more cash. Bacon anyone?
Bomb Ninja 5 A little robot ninja that is known to hide in trees. Dodge his bombs by moving the opposite side of the screen or strike as soon as possible.
Little Ninja 5 A mechanical ninja of the basic variety. They only know how to do one thing, run at you. Just jump over them, since it takes two hits to finish them off.
Pole Sliding Ninja 5 A mechanical ninja that loves to slide down long poles. They throw a single shuriken and slide off-screen. Jump and take them out quick.
Jumping Ninja 5 A mechanical ninja that is known for their great jumping skills. Walking right under them quickly, because they can hit their head on the ceiling and land on you.
Sword Ninja 5 A mechanical ninja known for their sword skills. Stay back and wait for them to land. The have a tendency to get their swords stuck in the ground. That's the time to prove to them, that you're superior!
Wall Ninja 5 A mechanical ninja that hides in the background. When it sticks its head out, mini ninjas are released. Attack them before the minis are let loose!
Mrs. Tea 5 Care for a cup of tea? I hope not, because it's hot and these maids are a bit clumsy. Jump back and then attack, or you'll feel the burn!
Monkey 6 A wild ape from the mountains. These chimps aren't happy to see you, so adapt to their jumpy and aggressive behavior.
Tengu Birds 6 A dangerous flying foe. Equipped with deadly blades, a Tengu Bird dashes quickly after circling around for a while. Jump away from them and strike when they sit still.
Mountain Fish 6 A real catch in the Tengu Mountains, one of these fish can be a real pain to avoid. Try finding a good place to attack from since they can be fast on their feet.....er fins.
Crab 6 Known for pinching seaside locals, crabs are somehow found in these mountains. They only hide behind waterfalls, so push them off the rocks and move on.
Albatross 7 These birds fly across Izumo and don't cause much problems. But some carry bombs in their feet and drop them on you. Dodge the bomb and attack the birds. I guess you can call it an Albatoss.
Fish 7 Regular old fish. Sometimes they jump out of the water, but mostly swim like normal. They will bounce around if they are not submerged in the lake.
Hermit Crab 7 These little crawlers have a shell to protect them. It doesn't help very much since they still die in one hit. Kill them if you'd like, but they aren't a huge threat.
Hannya Hammer Thrower 8 A ferocious foe that acts similarly to Hammer Bros. from Super Mario Bros.. Strike first and avoid if they start to throw hammers.
Hannya Climber 8 Found later in the stage, Hannya Climber slowly climb up the thin platforms to attack. If they make it up before you outrun them, they will jump at you. Try your best to speed through, while watching your jumps, as to not fall down to the abyss.
Rolling Daruma 8 A giant rolling Daruma doll. Can be killed, but not worth the effort, as they roll down the hill faster than you can hit them. Jump over accordingly.
Flaming Daruma 8 A giant Daruma doll thats... ON FIRE!! After they jump out of the lava below, crawl right under them or wait until they land to cross. These enemies cannot be killed.
Jelly Daruma 8 A Daruma doll encased in electric jelly. One hit will destroy the jelly and let out the Daruma inside. If the Daruma isn't after a short amount of time, the jelly will automatically explode. Once released, the Daruma will bounce towards you. Time your shot or crawl under when it's at the climax of it's jump.
Statue 8 Statues fill a section of Zone 8. They can shoot fireballs and fall down to lower ledges and roll across the floor. Only their heads (shown here) have hitboxes, so strike them at their head and they will blow up, allowing you to cross.
Marksman 9 A trained Marksman, armed with a shotgun. In the top-view, their shot will be a 3-way. However, they will only shoot one bullet in the side-view section. Jump over the bullet and strike for the side-view and avoid or strike when no bullets are fired in top-view.
