Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back/Items

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

In addition to crystals, the items you can collect within the levels are:

  • Wumpa Fruit: collect 100 of them to get an extra life
  • Aku Aku Mask: a mask of the sorcerer Aku Aku follows Crash and protects him in case of contact with an enemy, dissolving but preventing him from losing a life. By collecting two masks, double protection is provided. On the third collected mask, Crash becomes invincible for a short period of time, then reverting to normal double protection.
  • Crash Icon: worth an extra life

Boxes[edit]

Sometimes you'll find the mentioned items directly within the level, but most of the time these items are contained in boxes, which you'll have to break with one of your attacks to collect their contents. In the levels you will find many types of boxes, each with different characteristics. Sometimes these boxes can also be used to bridge gaps or reach otherwise inaccessible areas. By breaking all the boxes in a level, except the indestructible ones, you will get a gem. Some boxes may be well hidden and you will have to search them well.

The types of boxes that Crash can encounter are as follows:

Image Box Purpose
Basic Contains a single Wumpa Fruit.
Bounce By repeatedly jumping on these boxes, you will get a Wumpa Fruit with each jump until they break. Hitting them with a spin or a slide, you will get nothing.
? The contents of these boxes are unknown. Usually they contain large amounts of Wumpa Fruit.
Crash Contains an extra life.
Aku Aku These boxes contain a mask of the sorcerer Aku Aku.
Reinforced These reinforced boxes can only be destroyed with a belly blast. May contain one or more Wumpa Fruits.
TNT Jumping on these boxes will activate a 3 second timer, after which they explode, damaging everything around them. Take advantage of this time to get away. Avoid hitting these boxes with a spin, slide or belly strike, because in this case they will explode immediately.
Nitro These boxes explode on the slightest contact and must be avoided. However, they also count towards the total of boxes in a level and to destroy them you must find the appropriate detonator.
Checkpoint (C) When you lose a life, you will restart the level from the last C box reached.
Arrow By jumping on the boxes marked with an arrow, you can jump higher. You can't destroy them with a jump.
Iron They are indestructible.
Iron Arrow They have the same purpose as normal arrow boxes, but they are indestructible.
! By hitting these metal boxes, something inside the level will change. They usually make new boxes appear that were previously invisible.
Green ! By hitting this box, all the Nitro boxes in the level will explode.
